Bowline CC - Yet another weekend of awesome adventures...

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 13th October 2014 @ 6:13pm

Hey Bowliners,

Well if you didn't come to North Wales with us this weekend then you really did miss out. We had the most lovely weather, wall to wall sunshine on Anglesey on Saturday. Climbing at Holyhead mountain was just brilliant (especially the rather interesting 'Elephants Arse' route), although I wish I had had an abseil rope as the conditions at Gogarth were sublime! We had a lovely meal and drinks at the club hut on Saturday night thanks to Laurence, Louise, Adam and Dave for the great company!

And then Sunday morning brought us yet more wall to wall sunshine, this time even in the mountains. So we had all the activities in full swing with Dave handling the mountain biking, Laurence and Louise taking on the walking, whilst Adam and I enjoyed climbing at Carreg Wastad with the sun beating down on us all day. It's a hard life, but someones got to do it!

This week we will of course be at The Climbing Station on Tuesday as usual. And on Thursday we have a meet at the Brit Rock film festival in Derby (don't forget to book your tickets in advance). Bouldering beforehand at the climbing unit.

We've a couple of new dates in the diary too (see below). The BMC Midlands area meeting and AGM on the 19th November. And the club committee meeting on the 29th October.

Hope you all have a great week!

Bowline CC - It may be wet but we're still going for it!

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Thursday, 9th October 2014 @ 1:07pm

The forecast for the weekend involves the pesky wet stuff falling from the sky pretty much wherever you are in the country. So you might as well be in the lovely Snowdonia enjoying the mountains and of course the apres-mountain fun back at the hut. If like me you're not put off by a little rain then come and join us!

For those that are coming could you please let me know that you will be there? If you have transport sorted (and if you can offer a lift to anyone)? And of course whether you would like to join in the evening meal on the Saturday night which I will organise (and if so whether you have any special dietary requirements or food you simply can't eat)!

If you are coming to the hut for the first time don't forget to bring your sleeping bag, towel, wash kit, etc. And of course bring food for your breakfast/lunches and any drinkies you want :)

Given the inclement weather make sure you've got full waterproofs and bring wellies if you have them. Some people are bringing Mountain Bikes to go for a bike ride on one of the days so if you want to join in bring your bike too (or any other alternative activity equipment you like, perhaps a boat given the forecast)!

Any questions give me a shout - 07796 220055

Kind regards,

Hey Everybody,

Well I don't mind so much that it is raining today as I am sat in my nice warm/dry office. Especially as the sun was out yesterday so we could enjoy a lovely chilled out day of climbing at Craig Buddon and Markfield Quarry. The sun was also blazing in the South of France judging by the photo's from Loz, Tony and Andy who enjoyed a superb week climbing in Verdon gorge. Watchout for some photo's of their trip appearing soon on our Facebook page.

Looking forward to the coming weekend we will be off to the club hut for Scrambling and Walking. I will be preparing a dinner for the Saturday night so let me know if you are joining us and would like to be catered for. Also please let me know if you are planning to drive as it would make sense to co-ordinate lifts. I know we have some people coming who need transport and in any case taking less vehicles is cheaper and makes parking at the hut easier!

Next week we have an extra evening meet on Thursday 16th October for the Brit Rock Film tour. The films begin at 8:30pm at The Quad in Derby and to make the most of the evening in Derby why not join us beforehand from 6pm for pre-film Bouldering at The Climbing Unit!

This week we will of course be at The Climbing Station on Tuesday as usual. And there will be climbing at The Tower on Thursday evening too. See the events page on our website for details of these and all other club meets.

Bowline CC - Climbing, Scrambling Biking

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 29th September 2014 @ 7:07pm

Hi Bowliners,

Hope you all enjoyed the lovely weather at the weekend! I hear we had groups out climbing on Saturday and Sunday, good to see you all making the most of the weather, long may it last. On Sunday we had a great time at Bamford Edge. Congratulations to our newest member Angeline Burrell who claimed her first trad lead (and also her first clean 2nd at VS 4c, see our photo of the week). Also congratulations to another new member, Adam Rembiasz, who lead his first HS 4b!

Right I've a few things to remind you all of, so here goes:

  • Our hut secretary Bob Crosby will be out-of-town until 8th October. So if you have any enquires about the hut please send Bob a text message and he will respond as soon as he can!
  • It's less than two weeks to our club scrambling and walking weekend (11th/12 October). Have you booked your place at the hut before it's full?
  • A recce of the trails for the Mountain Biking weekend has revealed some fantastic riding. Really looking forward to this and places are going very quickly so get yourself booked in now!
  • This week we are bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday as usual. Plus indoor climbing at The Tower on Thursday. Weather permitting there will be climbing in the Peak at the weekend too, watchout for an update later this week!
  • Entries for the photo of the week on the front page of our website are always welcome, just email me your best pic from the past week!

Lisa McDermid

Posted by Andy Railton, Wednesday, 24th September 2014 @ 9:01am

  • I've some very sad news to pass on to everybody. Lisa McDermid who used to be a member of the club has been killed in an accident on the Aonach Eagach last Saturday. Lisa had moved to Scotland some years ago, but still kept in touch with the club and also used to join us on some of the meets when we went North of the border. We don't know when Lisa's funeral is yet, but as soon as we know we'll spread the word. Lisa's partner is Bob Hughes. If you would like to send your condolences I've sent round Bob's contact details by EMail.

Bowline CC - Another awesome weekend at the hut!

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 22nd September 2014 @ 6:19pm

Hi All,

Yes that's right I was lucky enough to enjoy an awesome weekend at our lovely club hut (thanks to the Ahonen-Bishopp and Archer familes for the great company). We had beautiful weather on Sunday for sport climbing in the Slate Quarries, I was pleased to get my first lead on slate (The Mallard, 5c) and also to second Sodor (6a) which my eldest son had already done in his trainers (he's catching me up, arrrgh). Looking forward to going back the hut for our club scrambling/walking weekend on 11th/12th October, why not join us!

Hopefully you've all received the email about the club dinner on Saturday 15th November. It's going to be a brilliant evening and hopefully I'll get to meet lots of you there. Keep an eye out for a further email this week about the chairmans walk on Sunday 7th December. Of course you'll find these dates and all our other meets at the bottom of this email, plus on the events page of our website. New additions include the club slideshow on Wednesday 10th December, plus the Bowline Christmas bouldering competition on 16th December.

Hopefully you've all had a chance to get familiar with our new website. We will shortly begin using the website to send out all emails and event information to you all. This will be done as a transition so that I will still send out emails to you directly but eventually the website will become the source for all our communication. This change will also allow you to use the website (or your own email) to send messages to club members (just like we do with the current Google groups facility). Further information on the group emails will follow!

This week we are bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday as usual. Plus indoor climbing at The Tower on Thursday. Weather permitting there will be climbing in the Peak at the weekend too, watchout for an update later this week!

Bowline CC - Annual Dinner (Saturday 15th November)

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 22nd September 2014 @ 2:01pm

Dear All,

Hopefully you've put the date for the club dinner in your diaries for Saturday the 15th of November. We are going to Brooksby Hall, which is on the A607 out towards Melton Mowbray. We kick off at 7pm for 7:30 p.m. We're having a three course meal followed by a disco afterwards. Dress is DJs for the men and posh frocks for the women. The cost of the tickets is £35 a head, you'll need to choose what you're having for starters, mains and desert from the list below.

There are some student rooms that we may be able to use, we're trying to confirm this with the hall if you would like to stay over. These would be £20 per head for the night. There is a house with 12 sleeping spaces, this does cost £450 a night for all 12 people (£37:50 each) but does include breakfast. If there are 12 folks who want to book this let me know and I can arrange it for you.

So £35 secures you a ticket, can you pay by BACS which is the much preferred method, see our website (don't forget to email Dave Toach and Andy Railton letting us know you've paid). Alternatively, send a cheque made payable "Bowline Climbing  Club Ltd." to Dave Toach, our treasurer, at 47, Muriel Road, Leicester LE3 6BH with "CLUB DINNER" marked on the back.

You must also send an email to Andy Railton stating what your food choices are.

Look forward to seeing you on the 15th of November.

Bowline CC - Andy Kirkpatrick and others in Oxford - 'First on the Continents'

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 22nd September 2014 @ 11:31am

Hi Everybody,

My weekly update will follow soon as will an update on the club annual dinner. But in the meantime checkout this:

FIRST ON THE CONTINENTS’: Friday 28th November 2014, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, 7pm, £15

‘First on the Continents’

brings together world class mountaineers Andy Kirkpatrick (UK), Alex Huber (Germany) and Michael Kennedy (USA) to tell of their epic adventures and mountaineering firsts across the continents of Antarctica, North America and Europe. The event, hosted by Doug Scott CBE and in aid of Community Action Nepal, is the first ever to celebrate the differing challenges and rewards of searching out new routes and first ascents across the globe.

Andy Kirkpatrick

will speak about his new route climbed in 2013 on Ulvetanna – The Wolf’s Tooth in Antarctica. In the public eye after leading the ONE Show’s Alex Jones in her BBC Sport Relief climb, he is a captivating public speaker with a razor sharp stand-up sense of humour. Andy’s search for the cold, long and difficult has led him to be described as "making Ray Mears look like Paris Hilton". The beauty of Antarctica combined with great story telling will make Andy’s lecture one to savour.

Alex Huber

, who is at the forefront of world rock climbing, will speak of his awe inspiring un-roped solo ascent of the overhanging Cima Grande face in the Dolomites. Once started, the only way off this route was to reach its 3,000 metre summit. Reinhold Messner has said this about Huber’s climb: "500 meters of absolute exposure, without protection and possibility of return, a brilliant deed, which can hardly be surpassed in elegance". In order not to compromise the solo commitment of the climb, the dramatic film footage of the ascent, requiring supporting climbers/cameramen close-by, was only recorded when he repeated the ascent!

Michael Kennedy

, a legendary figure in American and world climbing, will speak of first ascents in the harshest of mountain environments in Alaska, with its bitter temperatures and fierce storms. He will speak of his first ascents of the Infinite Spur on Mount Foraker in 1977 and the Wall of Shadows on Mount Hunter with Greg Child in 1994. His climbing is driven by intuition and living fully in the moment. An engaging and authoritative speaker, he was editor of Climbing Magazine for more than 20 years.

Doug Scott CBE

, the inspiration behind this event, has said, "Fascination with the unknown is a powerful force which has long driven climbers to look round the next corner. With a cast of world class climbers at the top of their game, ‘First on the Continents’ will take the audience around those corners with tales of pure adventure set amongst amazing landscapes."

The evening features a special charity auction of mountain prints signed by Messner, Bonington, Hornbein and Bonatti, which will raise funds for Community Action Nepal.

: Friday 28th November 2014, 7.00pm -10.00pm

Community Action Nepal was set up by Doug Scott as a way "for climbers to give something back to the country in which they lived their mountain dreams. CAN seeks to improve literacy and numeracy among children and adults, extend health and dental care, reverse the depopulation of remote villages, develop women’s groups and strengthen indigenous community-based culture. By supporting ‘First on The Continents’ events, you will help to make a real difference to the lives of the Himalayan mountain people".

Hope you all enjoyed yourselves this past week. Apologies for the lack of weekly email but there was no way for me to send it from Lundy. Needless to say with sunshine beating down every day and sooooo many great routes to climb we had a simply fantastic time on Lundy. Thanks to the assistance of Claudia Sarner we will now be offering dinner on the Saturday night, plus breakfast (porridge and toast) on Saturday and Sunday mornings all included in the price. So you just need to bring your packed lunches.

We have a club committee meeting this Wednesday, 7:30pm at the Blackhorse Pub in Aylestone.
