Did the Tennis and the TDF tempt you away from the hills this weekend? If so you missed out on a great climbing day at The Roaches, where Tony, Dick, Angeline, Marc and I spent a lovely day sunning ourselves... oh and doing some climbing too! Hopefully all those that went to Yorkshire had a lovely time watching the cycling.

Bowline CC -

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Thursday, 14th August 2014 @ 12:54pm

Hi Bowliners & Friends,

A fantastic time was had at the Summer Meal with great times out on the hills and at the hut. Andy Richards has penned a little trip report which I will send around separately.

This weekend coming we have another 'Peak weekend'. Starting on the Saturday at The Roaches, aiming to arrive at 10:00am for 10:30am start below The Sloth route (big overhang) on the top tier and then in the Winking Man pub at 7pm. For Sunday we are suggesting either hen cloud, the skyline or Ramshaws rocks. If you prefer walking/cycling then we suggest meeting at the roaches tea rooms. For camping there is a site opposite the tea rooms called Homestead Farm (contact Reg Day, 01538 300419).

Obviously the weekends plans are weather dependent so watch out for an update on Thursday or give me (Andy Potter) a call to find out what is happening!

NB: Please note that we are running at 6:30pm this Tuesday.

Bowline CC - It's another 'Peak Weekend'

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 23rd June 2014 @ 5:14pm

Did you all get out to enjoy some of your favourite outdoor pursuits this weekend? Don't forget to let me know what you've been up too, particularly any notable achievements or funny stories to share with the club!

We had a great weekend of climbing in the Peak district. On Saturday a group of us found a surprisingly quiet Birchen Edge which meant we had pretty much free run of the crag. Which made for a great introduction for some potential new members who all climbed very well. On Sunday we upped the challenge at Curbar with the highlight of the day being Tony Hextall's fantastic lead of 'The Peapod' HVS 5b (which was great fun to 2nd).

For those of you making the most of our lovely club hut please note that the code for the keysafe is changed regularly. Make sure you contact Bob Crosby several days before you visit to get the latest code.

Also we are pleased to report that the club has been successful in all three grant applications we made to the BMC. This means that we will be able to purchase a new group shelter for use on meets/events. We will be able to offer club members a free training session on 'escaping the system' (more details to follow). And we will be shortly unveiling a new integrated website for the club bringing together all the club information, news, emails, events, etc into one easy to one attractive and easy to use location (again more info will follow soon).

Tuesday evening:

- Running - Our usual off-road running meet in the Bradgate Park area, see the Events area for full details

- Cycling - Road cycling around the lovely local countryside, see the Events area for full details.

- Bouldering - Our regular indoor bouldering meet at The Climbing Station in Loughborough, see the Events area for full details.

Thursday evening:

- Climbing - Our regular Thursday night climbing meet, everyone welcome including beginners. This week we will be in the Peak unless the weather is adverse in which case we'll be indoors, see the Events area for full details.

Bowline CC - It's another 'Peak Weekend'

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 16th June 2014 @ 5:06pm

Our second of this years 'Peak weekends' is coming up this weekend. On Saturday we will be meeting at the Café in Calver (where the old Outside was) between 10:00-10:30 am for a coffee/tea (and bacon buttie). For those climbing we are going to go to Birchen's edge, which is particularly beginner friendly. There is also plenty of scope for cycling/walking in the area. Whatever you're chosen activity we are planning to go to the Robin Hood pub in the evening from 7pm onwards.

We will be do more activities again on the Sunday and are planning to go to Curbar Edge.  If you fancy staying up in the Peak on Saturday the Eric Byne campsite is a 10 minute walk form the Robin Hood pub; there's no need to book but you need to walk your stuff in as there is no vehicle access.

It would make sense to share transport so meeting up local to Leicester and sharing cars would be a good plan. We usually have a meeting place in Stanton under Bardon, just off J22 of the M1. If you want to share lifts let me (Andy Potter, 07796 220055) know so I can co-ordinate and give you the exact location/time to meet (probably 9am).

Bowline CC - Summers here... no honestly it really is!

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 9th June 2014 @ 1:52am

Good morning Bowliners,

An annoyingly typical summer it is being at the moment, with sunshine in the week whilst your staring longingly out of the office window wishing you were at a nice crag. And then giving all those nice crags a good soaking at the weekend when you are actually free to climb them.

That said we had good fun this week with climbing both locally and in the Peak on Thursday night. And several groups braved the showers at the weekend for adventurers in the Mountains. Club members also enjoyed a trip to the BMC Midlands area meeting and George cave lecture on Wednesday night (next meeting is on September 10th and features a talk by Nick Colton).

We now have a new BMC Access Rep for Midlands East, Jo Goodson. She would like to get familiar with the climbing activities that are happening in the area so if you go climbing at a local crag, please drop Jo an email to let her know (just when, where, and how many climbers) - jmg834@hotmail.com

This week once more we have a full range of activities on offer including running, bouldering, cycling and climbing. Also don't forget we have a peak weekend coming up on the 21st June (note this is a change of date, was previously 14th June).

SUMMER MEAL - Is only 3 weeks away, we still have places available so get yourself booked in for what will certainly be a great weekend.

Tuesday evening:

'Old Hare and Hounds' pub in Anstey at 6:30pm. Road cycling around the lovely local countryside with finishing back at the pub around 8pm. Contact Paul Barrett (07580 379067).

- Bouldering -
Our regular bouldering meet at The Station in Loughborough from 6pm. Once you've tired your arms out come and relax at the pub with us (see below). Contact Andy Potter (07796 220055).

- Whether you've been bouldering, cycling, running or just want to get out of the house. Come and meet us in the 'Old Hare and Hounds' pub in Anstey from 8pm for a chance to catchup and make plans for adventure! Contact Andy Potter (07796 220055).

No Slawston this evening, station instead (plus Thursday climbing update)

Posted by Andrew Potter, Sunday, 8th June 2014 @ 7:34pm

  • The weather does not look favourable today for a Slawstone picnic, so we will save that plan for a better day. Instead we'll be at the Climbing Station as usual for bouldering, plus I will be going for a run from the station at 7pm.

If you know anyone who was planning to go to Slawstone who may not see this email before they leave please let them know!

Also, on Thursday Brian Quinn is planning to climb in the Peak, if you fancy joining in get in touch with Brian (or let me know and I'll get you the details). I am also planning some local climbing, probably at Shepshed Quarry, again get in touch if you fancy coming along.

    Kind regards,

Posted by Andrew Potter, Sunday, 8th June 2014 @ 7:32pm

Weekly Update - The rest of this week and the weekend!

Posted by Andrew Potter, Sunday, 8th June 2014 @ 7:32pm

  • Apologies for the late email this week but I'm currently in the middle of moving house. It was a busy week just gone despite the weather. In fact no sooner had the week got under-way than Tony Hextall and Loz Kisson headed to Craig Buddon and Tony recorded another climbing milestone with his first E graded climb (Virago, E1 5b), well done Tony!

The bank holiday weekend weather was a little off putting and resulted in cancellation of our planned Pembroke meet. However various groups still headed out to other venue's in search of dry rock. Devon, North Wales and Dorset were all visited. I hear Devon was a bit of a wash out from a climbing perspective. However Brian, Simon, Claudia and I found good weather and dry rock down in Swanage and enjoyed a lovely couple of days climbing, with a nice chilled out BBQ inbetween!

Looking ahead the weather forecast is pretty good in North Wales this weekend. There is a group of us heading to the club hut for a weekend of climbing. Why not come and join us! I can help co-ordinate lifts if you let me know you'd like to come, also I am organising some group catering and you'd be welcome to join in!

    Thursday evening:

    - Climbing - Local climbing at Markfield Quarry if the weather permits or indoors at The Tower if the weather isn't good enough. Meet at 6pm, to get updates on whether we will be outdoors or indoors contact Andy Railton (07894 533629).

Upcoming meets (see our website for full meets list):

Pembroke wash out... Swanage here we come!

Posted by Andrew Potter, Sunday, 8th June 2014 @ 7:31pm

  • I know that we were very much looking forward to sea cliff climbing in Pembrokeshire, but sadly the weather forecast is most unfavorable. However, the sunniest town in Britain (according to the Met Office anyway) aka Swanage, has come up trumps for Sunday and Monday at least. If you still fancy sea cliff climbing with the warm sun on your backs then come and join us on the Dorset coast.

    The plan:
Saturday Evening - Meet at my place in Newbury (2 hours drive from Leicester) and stay overnight. Sunday Morning - Share lifts down to Swanage. Camping at Acton Field campsite (we'll pitch tents first then head off to climb). Sunday Evening - Head back to the campsite and fire up the BBQ! Monday Morning - Strike camp and head off for more climbing Monday Later Afternoon - Return to Newbury. If you want to stay Monday night that's fine, or head straight back home.

If you are interested please get in touch!
