Bowline CC - Wish you were here

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Tuesday, 11th April 2017 @ 11:18pm

Hi Bowliners,

Well at least I don't have to feel too bad about posting pictures of the amazing climbing here in sunny Font. As I see that loads of you have been out enjoying the beautiful british climbing, happy days! Need less to say we are having a fab time here with some great bouldering happening right across the grade range (and across the age range).

We have got some club members on their first time in Font and they are getting to grips with the unique Font style of bouldering. And of course of us that are back for our annual pilgramage. If you've not been to this magical place yet then I strongly recommend you make a plan to come here. If you don't consider your self a 'boulderer' Font may just change your mind (yes it is that good)!

Also enjoying the sunshine this weekend were a team of hard working volunteers who headed to North Walesto give our club hut some spring love. Thanks to these guys, all the earth has been removed from the front of the hut and hardcore laid, and then slabs laid at both entrances. The end wall of the hut has been tendered, bathroom windows painted, undergrowth cleared, exterior paintwork touched up and more work towards the base for the new shed. A really big thanks to all those who helped out and to our hut secretary, Paul Parker, for organising all the works. There is more improvements to the hut planned over the rest of this year, we'll keep you posted.

Also on the subject of the hut please be aware that following a proposal at our AGM and ratification by the committeee (as suggested at the AGM) we are increasing the cost for non-members using the hut to £12 per person per night. The cost of exclusive hire of the hut increases in line with this to £144 per night. Also, at the discretion of the committee, a cancellation charge (not exceeding the value of the booking) may be imposed on groups of four or more people cancelling a booking with less than seven days notice.

That's all from here in Font. Hope you all have a great Easter weekend!

Bowline CC - Lake district meet additional campers and pub dinner

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Thursday, 6th April 2017 @ 12:54pm

There were some people who enquired about additional camping for the Lake district meeting. We've negotiated some additional space with the farm for around 6 people to camp. If you were one of the people who wanted to do this please let me know ASAP so I can allocate the spaces.

Also, for those attending the Lake District meet we've had a minor change of plan. We will now be having our group meal on the Saturday night and then going to the nearby Newfield Inn Pub on Sunday night (which we will walk to from the farm). We are booked in at the pub for 7:30pm, there is no need to order in advance but if you'd like to see a sample menu you can find one on the pub website.

Looking forward to it!

Bowline CC - Hi ho, Hi ho, It's off to Font we go

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Wednesday, 5th April 2017 @ 12:00am

Hey Bowliners,

Wow we had a busy weekend with Bowliners spotted all over the Peak District. Whether it was Curbar, Stanage, Burbage North, Raven Tor you'd have found club members out trad climbing and bouldering. Seeing the pictures on Facebook made we slightly jealous that I couldn't join you, although I had a nice time taking some Explorer Scouts climbing at Symonds Yat on Sunday. It was also great to see some of our new club members joining in the outdoor fun too.

This week we have the first meeting of our new committee. Any club members are welcome to attend committee meetings so if you'd like to join us we'll be at the Blackhorse Pub in Aylestone from 7:30pm.

Hope you had fun bouldering at The Climbing Station tonight, getting ready for our upcoming trip to Font, oh yes it may be a little quieter at the bouldering wall next week. I promise we will try not to tease you too much with pictures of the awesome Font bouldering on the club Facebook page ;)

But before we head off to Font we have time for our first outside Thursday climbing session. Join us from 5:30pm on Thursday at Markfield Quarry.

You may not get an update from me until I'm back from Font. But if anyone is heading out climbing in the UK don't forget to share your plans with your club friends and let's get as many members out climbing as possible (see below for info on how to email club members).

Bowline CC - Climbing at the weekend

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Thursday, 30th March 2017 @ 12:55pm

Hey Everyone,

We don't have a climbing meet planned this weekend. However the forecast is looking reasonable, particularly on Sunday. I'm sure there will be some of you keen to head out for a climb and it would be great if club members could climb together, share transport, etc.

So if you are thinking of going climbing and want to invite other club members along, or if you are looking for a partner to climb with, you can easily email all the club members by addressing your email to

  • Note that the email must come from the email address that we have on the club email list otherwise it will not be sent, you should receive a copy of your email if the process has worked successfully. Any replies to your email will go to everyone.
  • Club members can opt-out of receiving this kind of email by changing the 'Receive unofficial email from club members' option to 'No'. If you need assistance with this please contact the web master.

Happy Climbing,

Bowline CC - Peaks and Pads

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Tuesday, 28th March 2017 @ 5:38pm

Hey Everyone,

Well that was a cracking weekend in the Peak District, what a way to kick start the climbing season. We had a great time basking in the sun at Lawrencefield and Millstone on Saturday, with Rob Goodman leading way on the hard routes with a repeat of Regents Street (E2 5c). Sunday was equally warm and pleasant for bouldering at Curbar with Tony Bishopp and friends working the hard problems on the boulders whilst the rest of us headed up to the main crag for some slightly easier trad than the previous day. There were lots of tired arms and worn finger tips by late in the afternoon. You can check out a few pictures from the weekend over on our facebook page and also the photo of the week on our website homepage.

This past week also saw a new addition to the clubs equipment for members to use. We are now the proud owners of a 'SNAP Wrap' bouldering mat which is kept at the club hut and is available for club members to use when staying at the hut. The mat may be taken out by club members for bouldering in the area, but must not be taken away from the hut overnight. Ideal for a warm-up on Dinorwic Mill Rocks just outside the hut.

The BMC are running another First aid & Mountain Medicine weekend in the Peak District on 3rd/4th June. Among the top doctors running this weekend is one of our club members, Michelle Aukland. To find out more and book your place head over to the BMC website

As always come rain or shine the Bowliners will be bouldering at The Climbing Station tonight getting ready for our upcoming trip to Font. And we'll be working on our roped climbing on Thursday which this week is back to The Tower climbing wall. Although it won't be long until we are heading outside for climbing on Thursdays, hooray!

Have a great week everybody!

Bowline CC - Our new committee and an important BMC matter

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Tuesday, 21st March 2017 @ 2:00pm

Hey Everyone,

At long last I have the pleasure of writing a weekly email which contains an opportunity to climb with us outdoors on the upcoming weekend. About time you might be saying and I entirely agree, and that is why (weather permitting) we have two days of climbing in the Peak district for you to enjoy this weekend. It would be great to see as many of you as possible joining us!

What better way to prepare yourself for this weekends adventures than by practicing your technique at our ever popular bouldering at The Climbing Station tonight. Or joining us for our Thursday climbing which this week takes us to Bear Rock climbing wall at Warwick Uni

For those of you who have emailed about camping on the Lake District meet I'm afraid I haven't heard back from the farm yet. I will chase them and hopefully let you know soon.

Also, we have another meet to open bookings for next week which is our trip to Northumberland on the Whitsun bank holiday weekend, watch out for the invitation email!

That's it from me this week, I'm sure there probably something else I'm meant to be telling you about but I can't recall it right now. Too distracted with the thought of outdoor climbing perhaps ;)

Bowline CC - Our new committee and an important BMC matter

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Thursday, 16th March 2017 @ 3:38pm

Hey Bowliners,

Another Bowline year begins following the club AGM last night. Thanks to those that came along, however it would have been good to see a few more members present. If you didn't make it you missed out on a fairly quick AGM followed by a great quiz (thanks to Andy Railton for organising the quiz).

On behalf of all club members I'd like to say a big thanks to our outgoing Chairman, Richard Freer, for heading up the committee over the past two years. We now welcome our new chairman Zoe Pickering, new club secretary Lizzie Jones, and two new ordinary members Claire Coles and Lisa Mackenzie. The club is fortunate to have a such a dedicated committee and we are anticipating another great year for the club!

Coming up on the 22nd April is the BMC AGM. As an affliated club all members of the Bowline are club members of the BMC. You may not know much about the BMC and how it relates to the club which is something I hope to address in due course. However right now I'd like to draw your attention to an important matter which has arisen in the BMC which should be of interest to all members. The president of the BMC has released a statement on this matter and I would strongly urge all club members to take the time to read this statement and the details of the associated motion. In my opinion it is critical that a true representation of the BMC memberships view on this matter is enacted at the AGM. As such I would ask that you exercise your right to vote on this matter which you can do easily using the proxy voting card, see the details of how to do this on the BMC website.

Those of you lucky enough to have a place on this weekends Prusik knots and tricky situations training course watch out for joining instructions coming out via email very soon. And watch out for an email from me soon about climbing in the Peak District on the weekend of the 25th/26th March (weather permitting).

Remember bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday evening, and climbing at The Tower on Thursday evening. I'll be at The Tower tonight, hope to see you there!

Bowline CC - More meets than you can shake a stick at

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Tuesday, 7th March 2017 @ 1:25pm

Hey Bowliners,

It's great to see that lots of club members have been out enjoying the UK's mountains this weekend. Although it is not quite climbing conditions yet, the walking looks to have been delightful in the Lake district. Just a same the winter climbing scene hasn't been particularly fruitful, well not here in the UK at least.

But not to worry as spring is coming and we have lots of exciting trips planned for this year. The places for our Lake District weekend were snapped up in no time at all but we have the option of some more camping places as per my email yesterday. Once we've got that sorted out I'll be opening up the places for our Northumberland trip on the Whitsun bank holiday weekend. And then after that I'll open up the bookings for our summer meal so you'll have lots of opportunities to join us. We're going to have so much fun!

As I've not yet published all the meets on the website in their full detail I've included below the current list of planned meets for the year. Please note the date for the Mountain Biking weekend has changed to the 4th/5th November. Of course this list doesn't include the many weekend days where we'll be heading to the Peak which hopefully will be every weekend if the good old british weather is good to us.

You may see even more new faces at our bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday evening, and climbing at The Tower on Thursday evening. Please take a moment to say hi to our potential new members.

Bowline CC - There's trad in the air

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 27th February 2017 @ 6:29pm

Hey Bowliners,

I'm back, and this time I won't be disappearing off again, well not until the bouldering trip to Fontainebleau in April that is. This means I'm getting stuck into organising fantastic meets for you all to enjoy and you should already have received an invite to the Lake District trip on the May Day bank holiday weekend. We're expecting places for this to go fast so grabs yours now via the website. It will be great to have a weekend of trad climbing in the lovely Lakes to look forward to, but that does mean we ought to get out for some practice beforehand, oh OK then!

Whilst I'm thinking about club events I'd like to take the opportunity to remind you of a very important event for all club members. Our Annual General Meeting is coming up at the Blackhorse Pub in Alyestone, from 7:30pm on Wednesday 15th March. Not only is this your chance to have a say on club matters and the election of the club committee. But you can also to enjoy an exciting talk from our very own Suzie Imber, who will be sharing tales of adventure from her most recent expedition to conquer un-climbed 6000's metre peaks in the Andes.

It's great that we've recently been contacted by quite a number of people interested in joining our club. You may see some new faces at our bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday evening, and climbing at The Tower on Thursday evening. Please take a moment to say hi to our potential new members.

It's the season for talks and lectures still; on the week after our AGM the Solihull Mountaineering Club are hosting a talk by Pete Whittaker. This is taking place on Wednesday 22nd March at 8pm over in Solihull, tickets are £8. Click on the poster for full details.

Bowline CC - Meets update

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Friday, 10th February 2017 @ 2:01pm

Hi Bowliners,

In an attempt to be much more pro-active with our meets we've been working to get all the details planned out early in the year. You should already have received invites to our joint alpine meet with Ceunant Mountaineering club in July. And you can find all the club hut meets for the year on the Meets & Events page of the website, including our next Love The Hut weekend which is coming up in late April.

We have a number of other exciting meets which I hope to have detailed invites sent out for when I get back from skiing. We have secured accommodation for these meets and I can give you outline of the meets as follows so you can get the ones of interest in your diary. Booking of places for these meets will be done via the website and you'll receive a invite for each meet through which you can make your booking:

  • 29th April - 1st May - Lake district meet - We've got the Wallabarrow camping barn booked for the May Day bank holiday weekend, there are 10 places available in the camping barn. The camping barn has the lovely Wallabarrow crag just next door and lots of other great climbing venues nearby not to mention fantastic walking/cycling. We plan to head to the nearby pub (walking distance) for dinner on the Saturday evening and then do a group meal in the camping barn on the Sunday evening. We expect this weekend to cost £36 per person (which is the cost of the 3 nights in the camping barn plus the group meal on the Sunday night).
  • Whitsun bank holiday weekend (28th - 30th May) - We've got a bunk house booked at the Budle Bay campsite in Northumberland. We have 12 places in the bunkhouse and there is option of camping as well. We've not done a club trip to climb in Northumberland for a long time and I've heard good things about the climbing and bouldering so I'm looking forward to checking it out. As we're staying near the coast we'll meetup for fish and chips on the Saturday evening and then do a group the Sunday. We expect this weekend to cost £36 per person (which is the cost of the 3 nights in the camping barn plus the group meal on the Sunday night and breakfast).
  • Weekend of 1st/2nd July - Summer meal (North Wales) - We're heading to the Bryn Hafod hut in southern Snowdonia to check out the climbing in this lesser visited part of North Wales. We plan to have a pub dinner this year so no one has to do any cooking on the Saturday night. We expect the cost of the weekend to be around £40 which should include accommodation, dinner and the pub and breakfast.

Kind regards,

Bowline CC - Morocco Rocks and the CHR

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 6th February 2017 @ 11:01am

Hey Everybody,

A very big thank you to everyone who helped make this years Charnwood Hill Race a great success. The race is a very important event for the club and it was great to see loads of club members helping to make the day run smoothly. A special thanks should go to the race committee for all their hard work up to and including the race day (and afterwards too), well done Paul Barrett, Richard Freer, Lisa Mackenzie, Dave Toach, Zoe Pickering, Suzie Imber, and Andy Railton.

A big well done to our Bowliners who ran the race (checkout the pictures over on our Facebook Page). Congratulations to the Tamela Maciel who shaved over 30 minutes off her time from last years race to finish as the 16th placed women and the 1st Bowline women over the line. And also congratulations to Rob Pullen who also beat his time from last year to finish as the 16th placed man and the 1st Bowline man over the line. Full results for the race can be viewed on the website.

Looking forward we have a club committee meeting next Wednesday evening (15th Feb), 7:30pm at the Blackhorse Pub. With our Club AGM coming up in March it's a good opportunity to come along and see how the committee works as we are looking for some new club members to join the team.

Also coming up in March we have the first of this years 'family meets'. This meet is open to all club members but is particularly aimed at those wanting to bring their children along to a meet. For this trip we are heading to our club hut in Snowdonia, for more details checkout the meet information on the website.

Finally a quick note to say that having not been able to send you an update for the past couple of weeks due to being away climbing in Morocco (which was amazing, watch out for a trip report soon), I am going to be away ski-ing next week, so my next update will be in a couple of weeks time. In the meantime I hope you all enjoy yourselves bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday evening, and climbing at The Tower on Thursday evening.

Andy :)

Bowline CC - Calling all club members

E-mail sent by Andrew Potter, Monday, 23rd January 2017 @ 5:43pm

Hey Bowliners,

It's been a couple of weeks since my last email and it will be another couple of weeks till the next one as I am off to Morocco for some winter sun and adventurous trad climbing. Let's hope while I'm gone the winter conditions here improve for those of you looking for icy adventures, especially as we have the club hut reserved for a members meet this coming weekend so make sure you book your hut places and cross your fingers for good conditions.

I know some club members have been out finding the odd bit of winter climbing here and there although I hear it involved some 'misery' (ask Rob and Charlene about Cadair Idris). It seems conditions were more favourable for our skiers on last weeks trip to Tignes, I haven't heard any details yet but I imagine it was a good time judging from the pictures and comments on Facebook.

You should hopefully have seen invitations to our club Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 15th March, 7:30pm at the Blackhorse Pub in Aylestone. This is an important event for the club and we are very keen to see lots of members present as it is one of the key opportunities for you to have a say about how the club is run. Adding considerably to the appeal of this years AGM we are very lucky to have Suzie Imber giving a talk on her recent trip to summit unclimbed 6000 metre peaks in the Andes.

Also back for 2017 is the ever popular 'Prusik Knots and tricky situations' workshop on Sunday 19th March. Already 4 out of the 8 places available have been booked. So if you want to attend book your place now via the website, it's free for club members (thanks to funding from The BMC). And mentioning the BMC a reminder that the next BMC Midlands area meeting is on Wednesday 1st February.

Don't forget to grab your climbing shoes and join us for bouldering at The Climbing Station on Tuesday evening, and climbing at The Tower on Thursday evening as usual.

Have a great couple of weeks,
