We're back from a brilliant time in the Picos de Europa. Although the weather wasn't exactly in our favour it didn't really matter as the Picos has so much to offer. With great walking, cycling, via-ferrata and canyoning so even when we couldn't climb we were still off having great adventures together. There just isn't space for me to start telling you about all the great things we did in this email. Just ask anyone who went along and I'm sure they'll tell you all about it and by the time they've finished you'll be itching to go there yourself.
Summer time climbing is here now so come and make the most of it with us. Starting off with our Thursday climbing trip which this week takes us to Birchen Edge from 6pm this Thursday. Then it's off to the club hut in North Wales this weekend, with dry/warm weather forecast all weekend it is definitely the time to make the most of the great climbing and walking in Snowdonia. And looking a bit further ahead it's high time you got your place booked for our Summer Meal weekend in the Forest of Dean, with climbing and mountain biking by day and a lovely meal and partying on the Saturday night.
Also if you fancy trying your hand at a mountain marathon then why not enter the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon. There are still a few places available and we have several pairs of Bowliners entering.
Have a great week one and all,
I've delibrately delayed this weeks update as I will be enjoying our trip to the Picos de Europa next week so I won't be sending you an update again until I get back. Needless to say there are lots of excited Bowliners counting down the hours until we fly out for what promises to be an excellent adventure. Watch out for pictures and updates on our facebook group and of course we'll happily tell you all about it when we're back.
If you can't join us in the Picos don't forget we have plenty more great meets planned for this year so make sure you've booked your places and got these in your diary. As well as the planned meets there will no doubt be day trips to the Peak as well, like the excellent day we had last Sunday at Bamford edge, featuring lots of 'hanging around' on Gargoyle Flake (see our photo of the week or more pics on the facebook page).
Whilst I'm away it would be great if there was some Peak trips arranged. So if you are up for getting a group together it's easy for you to email other like minded club members (see the instructions at the bottom of this email).
OK I'm off to pack my bags. Hope you all have a great time whilst we're away!
Message from club member Neil Partridge - Last minute change of plans, I'm free to climb tomorrow if anyone is available (Saturday 4th). Open to locations/rock type. Neil 07920158948
Apologies for the late running of this weeks update, it's been a busy old time at the moment!
Hopefully you all made the most of the fantastic bank holiday weekend. I've been enjoying looking at the photo's of the club trip to Cornwall which have been shared by various members on Facebook. From what I hear everyone had a great time. Andy Richards has kindly pulled together a trip report which you can find on the Articles page of our website, check it out!
Last night we had a club committee meeting and it was great to be reviewing lots of positive activity in the club. We've had a great influx of new members in the past couple of months and I'm very much looking forward to seeing our new friends out on some meets soon (the Summer meal in July would be ideal for new members to get involved). Work on the club hut continues under the guidance of Paul Parker, we have a new fire door installed, and work is happening over the next few days to finish of the new drainage. Our meets have been going well (even if I do say so myself) and it's great to have new meets being run by other members, so we can offer a wide range of activities. Remember we are always happy to have members run meets for the club, even if it's just a day trip to the Peak there are likely to be plenty of members who would be keen to join in. Get in touch with me if you want to offer something.
Our next committee meeting is on Wednesday 13th July, 19:30 at the Blackhorse Pub in Aylestone. Club members are welcome to attend committee meetings so feel free to join us and find out what it's all about.
Tonight we are climbing at Froggatt Edge. We don't have any plans for the weekend but the weather looks good so surely a trip to the Peak is in order. If anyone is going and is happy to have club members join in let me know and I'll spread the word.
Hopefully see you all soon!
P.S. Don't forget to book your summer meal places!
What a shame the rain put a damper on our plan to meet up with the guys from Barrow MC at The Roaches on Saturday. Although I was glad to hear that a group of Bowliners did make it up there on Sunday and had a great days climbing. Hopefully those heading to Cornwall this coming weekend will be luckier with the weather!
Thanks to Andy Railton we have another great meet for you to enjoy this September. Cycling the Peddars Way in Norfolk by Mountain Bike or Hybrid Bike, over the weekend of the 17th/18th September. The plan is to cycle the route on Saturday, stay at the Youth Hostel in Wells-next-the-Sea on Saturday night, then a leisurely cycle back on Sunday to the start. If you're interested contact Andy Railton ASAP so we can book hostel places - 07894 533629 or email@example.com.
Also on the same weekend (17th/18th September) we will be hosting a Family meet at our club hut in North Wales. The meet is aimed at (but not limited to) groups with children. We're not sure what exactly will go on at this meet, because the kids rule. Possibly we will got climbing the slate quarries or out into the mountains during the day, and have a communal meal and a few board games on the Saturday night. An invite with more details will follow soon.
We have a double whammy of things to do this Thursday evening. There will be climbing outdoors at Birchen Edge from 6pm. And there is also the LOROS bouldering competition at The Tower. Of course there is our ever popular Tuesday night bouldering at The Climbing Station.
Have a great week and weekend!
Hi Bowliners and friends,
Lots more fun in the sun since my last email. Well perhaps not so much sun on last Tuesday evening, but it was great to be able to make Tuesday bouldering for a change and see so many of you there. The sun did shine for our Thursday climbing trip to Beacon Hill and with plenty of bouldering pads we had a great time pushing ourselves on some challenging routes and again it was super to have a good turn out!
The sun was also shining in North Wales this weekend where I was fortunate enough to enjoy a great weekend at our lovely club hut with an awesome group of friends. There was sporting climbing, trad climbing and bouldering aplenty. Hopefully you all found time to get out and enjoy the good weather too!
Weather permitting we will try to strike out a little further this week for our Thursday climbing session, hopefully heading to one of the closer Peak District crags. Watchout for an email from me with the details on Wednesday.
And speaking of things to do on a Thursday evening don't forget that the The Tower is hosting the LOROS bouldering competition on Thursday 26th May.
Hopefully you've all seen the invite to the summer meal. Great to see people booking places already, it would be awesome to have a completely full house and see as many of you there as possible!
We have a joint meet with the guys from Barrow MC this coming Saturday at The Roaches. Plan is to meet at the Don Whillans hut at 10am sharp and then head up to the crag for climbing. At the end of the day the Barrow guys are either going to head to the local pub for food, or have drinks and cook a meal at the hut. Those who want to stay for food/drinks are welcome to join in.
Although there is no space left at the Don Whillans hut, if you wanted to stay over then you may be able to book in at the Roaches Bunkhouse or there is camping nearby too.
Fingers crossed for good weather!
